Case Study - Freight Center
Objective
To develop an internal system of quoting based on business rules set forth in contracts between Freight Center (the client) and their providers. The rules for such quoting were complex and likely to change over time. The system needed to take into account several variables in order to accomplish accurate quoting.
Solution
Because of the complexity and length of the project Techgrowth engaged several full time resources for the client. We setup an extended working relationship so the team could become familiar with their business processes and develop a working solution for them.
Initially we gathered all the details on the rules each contract would be requiring. Given the industry and type of service these business rules were complex and required detailed diagramming in order to fully understand their relationships with the final output.
Once diagrammed the tables were created in SQL Server. Initially screens were built to perform the operations of creating, reviewing, updating, and deleting (CRUD). This common interface was designed to make the management of these contracts simple and easy to understand. Many of the objects required multiple data relationships resulting in a interface which could support One-Many and Many-Many design models.
Having built this structure the client began building the data for the contracts. Adjustments to the design of the interface and data model were made as needed. This included interfaces for importing large amounts of data via Excel files into the system in order to update the required tables.
Once the data was in place the engine for applying these rules to their contracts was constructed. Methods were put into place to filter the rates provided by carriers based on these new business rules. The programming was done in such a way that detailed control over the output of the quotes could be achieved in real time.
